Let’s Talk About Essential Oils!

This week, I want to talk about something I hope will be of interest to some of you. It’s something I have been using on and off for years and while there is controversy that surrounds them, I know it’s the perfect topic to cover in this blog! Let’s talk about Essential Oils!

Essential oils have been around for thousands of years. People in the ancient world used plants and their juices, or oils for a great many things. They cooked with them, scented their homes with them, and even realized the immense capacity for their use in medicine. I want to get this out of the way right now. I am NOT advocating that one use essential oils for “healing” as there have not been studies on the subject. What I am advocating is using them as a compliment to what we call “western medicine” because I believe they are complimentary to each other.

My Top 5 Favorite Essential Oils

  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Peppermint
  • Clove

Let’s talk about essential oils and internal use. It’s a controversial topic, even more than the use of the oils themselves. Personally, I’ve used a specific brand of oils internally and have not had an issue. Many will say that you should not use them internally and there are MANY that you should never use internally. In fact, topical application is the best way to use the oils if you choose to do so. I personally have stopped using them internally, despite my preferred brand Young Living being tested and seen as safe for said use.

There are two different ways to distil or obtain the oils from a fresh plant. There’s hydro or water distillation and steam distillation. You can read more about them here. I prefer the steam method as I believe it yields a better product. That is how many companies distil their oils and I believe it is considered the “gold standard”.

I will do more about how to use essential oils in a future post but I wanted to share a bit of my thoughts with you all before I do that.

Please let me know in the comments if you would like a series dedicated to different oils. I can do an entry for some of the oils and cover use, what they may help with, and some history of the oils.

In a previous post, I talked about one of my favorite oils. Check it out here! Let me know what oil, if any have you used in the past. I would love to know if you’ve had experiences with using essential oils.

Well, that’s it for this week. Until next week, be well and namaste!
