Learning a new skill or hobby can be a lot of fun. In fact, learning as Self-Care isn’t a new concept.

That sounds like a radical idea, right?! What if you could find a new hobby or skill that nourished your most inner longings, and gave you the satisfaction that you’re learning something you love? For example, if you’re a creative person, you could learn how to crochet, knit, or sew. On the other hand, if you’re more analytical, you could teach yourself how to code websites. It all comes down to what you like to do and what is going to nourish your mind, body, and soul. 

Many years ago, my grams tried to teach me how to crochet. I wanted to learn because I’m naturally a creative person. However, getting my head wrapped around it wasn’t easy. Fast forward to a few years after she died, and I decided to pick it up again. Know what happened? I learned super fast, had a great time with it, AND I felt like I was honoring her memory, all at the same time! 

How to incorporate Learning as Self-Care

As with most things, there are so many ways to do this. You can go to the library, or use technology. It’s up to you. For me, the best, easiest, and free tutorials can be found on YouTube. That’s where I go when I want to learn something new. I’ll give you a couple of examples to get the creative juices flowing!


Crochet is one of my personal passions. When I was first starting to learn, I scoured YouTube for just the right teacher and guess what? I found her! Her name is Jayda and her channel is called Jayda In Stitches. She’s my go-to gal.


After learning crochet, I wanted to learn how to sew. Once again, I hit up YouTube and found a gal named Dana. Made Everyday (also on YouTube) because Dana is so bright and cheery. She made the whole notion of sewing seem super easy. My mom gave me her old machine, and off I went!

I learned a lot from them! I’ll leave a link to at least one of each of their videos so ya’ll check them out. I highly recommend them!

In short, learning a new skill can be a great way to practice self-care because then, you can take that skill and use it to keep yourself sane in these crazy times. I hope you enjoy these two fun creators and they inspire you on your self-care journey!

Other Ways to Incorporate Learning as Self-Care

There are so many ways to incorporate learning as self-care. These ones mentioned here don’t even break the surface. In fact, another great way to do this is simply to read. Yup, just pick up a book on a subject that interests you and learn about it! Frequently, that’s how we find our passions, and new experiences in life. Never forget that you’re able to learn anything, at any age.

One final thing. Don’t shy away from something just because you’re not sure if you can do it. You can do it! I made that mistake many times and you know what? I missed out on some amazing opportunities. Go and find a hobby that you may or may not have thought of before and give it a shot! You never know what may happen!
