Hydration for Wellness

water, water for wellness
A drop of water for Wellness!

The idea of hydration for wellness is not a novel concept.

One of the wonderful things about the human body, as it relates to holistic wellness, is that it is very resilient. We can beat the crap out of our bodies, and for the most part, it will still keep us going. Unfortunately, I, like most other people, drink WAY too much coffee, and not enough of the other beverages that I should in order to keep me hydrated.

We’ve grown up with sports drinks, sugary drinks, sodas, and of course, coffee! As older adults, some of you may even love to indulge in some more “fun” beverages, from time to time.  In fact, many of us don’t even think of the other beverage that we need to be drinking a lot more of, water! In today’s episode, I want to talk about how we can use water to help cultivate and maintain holistic, and overall wellness.

Our bodies are 70% water! That’s a statistic that was taught to many of us in school, and it still blows me away! This simple and abundant beverage is all around us, and we don’t even think to drink it, much of the time.

Hydration for Wellness, All!

When it comes to wellness, and living the “holistic” lifestyle, hydration is super important. Without it, we can get sick, have headaches, and just not feel our best. A little story here. My MIL, who has since passed on, told me on so many occasions that she just didn’t like water. I get it, there is no taste, it’s not really fun, in fact, it’s downright bloody BORING! We tried flavorings, but she just did not like to drink. As a result, she had extra health issues. The point is that water/hydration is key!

Soda will not do it. Coffee definitely will not do it. You need to drink water and eat foods that are high in water (think lettuce and cucumber). I suggest that if you find regular water boring, try sparkling water, or adding a no-calorie flavoring to your water. Heck, you can find no-calorie flavored seltzer to chug down! There are so many ways to get hydrated with water!

Now, I’m not saying go out and drink a gallon of water in a day. I tried it, and despite being successful, it’s not practical each day. Frankly, I spent over half my day peeing, the day I did that. I kid you not. What I AM saying is, try to aim for at least 4-5 8-ounce glasses a day, to start. I know it sounds like a lot, but it may be easier than you think.

I have gotten to the point where I actually like water, of all kinds. Sometimes, it can also help get your bodily functions from a place of stagnation and being stuck, to working again. Some people even see a bit of weight loss, after a bit of water weight gain. That’s because water also can help flush out your system and clean out your kidneys!

To say hydration for wellness is important is an understatement. During this next week, try and drink from 4-5 glasses of water a day. See how you feel. I know that I feel better when I stay hydrated! Grab a water bottle and a straw, and start drinking so you can be healthier!

If you want to cool down with some water, why not pair it with my post on feeling like a Holistic Hot Mess? 🙂
