Wow, I cannot believe we are almost at the end of National Mental Health Awareness month! Today, I want to talk to you all about how to fight negative emotions. It’s not an easy task, and we all experience them from time to time. Fortunately, there are things we can do to combat or fight them off.
Negative emotions are a fact of life. We all feel them at some point and that’s okay. We are human and to that end, we need to remember that it’s okay to not always be okay. The emotions I’m talking about can run the spectrum of human emotion. Sometimes we’re angry, sometimes sad, or even just plain depressed. All these are negative emotions we will experience at some point in our journey on this planet. So can we really fight negative emotions? Yes! How do you do it? Let’s make a list!
5 Ways to Fight Negative Emotions
- Acknowledge them to yourself
- Talk about them with others (therapist, friend, etc)
- Write them down (journaling is a powerful tool)
- Find ways to release them out of your mind
- Commit to taking positive action going forward to handle the emotions when they arise.
This list is not exhaustive but it’s a good start. You’re not going to always be successful with any of the above tips. That’s just a fact of life. In addition, there are going to be times when none of the above ideas will work. That’s okay. Additionally, each situation is unique to you and your experience.
Consequently, when we experience negative emotions, we may feel like we’ve lost our emotional center. In this post, I talk about how to find your center after “losing” it. It’s one of my favorite posts because it’s applicable to so many situations, especially what we’re talking about this week. Let’s face it, negative emotions throw us all into some type of turmoil, even for a short amount of time. That’s just straight up FACTS!
Well, that’s it for this week. Until next time, be sure to take time for yourself. Be well and namaste!
